Saturday I went to the wedding of a couple good friends here in Chapel Hill. It was great and we all had a good time at the wedding and reception. Great food was had, puzzled Mid-Westerners enjoyed Shrimp and Grits, and there was plenty of nice boozey-woozey.

So it was that I spent most of Sunday sitting around with some friends and helping one or two piece together their situations. Being of sound body I later found myself on the highway that afternoon giving a lift to some of these friends indeed. It was an odd day, for that evening was the last a good friend of mine spent in Chapel hill before packing up his worldly goods and heading west. I also saw a circus and enjoyed some live music. Weird eh?

What sums it up for me is a moment that happened midday around 3. The kind that knocks you a little off keel. It was the moment that another friend of mine called to arrange travel to the circus as I was pulling over the side of the highway to allow one of my passengers a better look at American road construction was indicative of the day I had. A lot of me trying to talk cogently while nervously glancing in the rear view mirror while also trying to keep track of activity in the back seat. All of this with my car's hazard lights on.

I can't help feeling that some shit is about to go down

The obvious tragedy of this photo (and the 360 others like it) is almost eclipsed by the disturbing redactions of the DOD. First they try to keep these images from us in order to soften the blow of the soldiers death, then they rob the man's comrades of their place in the moment. What we have here is a dead man and an army of blank faces. It's like something out of Star Wars. When did we build our own Clone Army?

Back in the US however, individuality re-emerges...
